Honoring a Legacy:
The David Shapiro Fund for Sustainable Advancement

It is not often that a school has the opportunity to reintroduce itself to its constituency and to reaffirm and strengthen its most important values. This year is one such time for the Edmund Burke School—a few years after the completion of the school’s new building and shortly before only the second change of Head of School in our forty-one year history. For twelve years, David Shapiro has guided Burke with an intense dedication to advancement in curricular programming, physical facilities, and faculty development. Most importantly, with David's leadership, Burke has remained true to its core values as it has moved forward in so many exciting ways. Upon his retirement, we would like to acknowledge David’s devotion to our students and his tireless efforts on behalf of the school.

The Board of Trustees is therefore proud to announce Honoring A Legacy: The David Shapiro Fund for Sustainable Advancement (the “Fund”), a Board-designated fund1 designed to support key programs for the next 10 years.

Specifically, the fund will target the following programs:

Signature programs such as Equity and Inclusion, Service Learning, and Leadership are powerful and compelling demonstrations of Burke's commitment to democratic, humane, and progressive education. At the same time that we sustain and strengthen such programs, it is imperative that we identify and seize opportunities to assure that Burke is known as one of the top choices for those families who treasure academic engagement, independent thinking, freedom and responsibility, and informed and active citizenship for their children.

In support of our school and an even brighter future for Burke as well as in thanks for David's leadership, we invite you to join Honoring a Legacy so that future generations of students continue to benefit from Burke's powerful and liberating approach to education.
